As per reports, Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found dead in a room near their home’s kitchen and in a bathroom, respectively. While authorities did not find any signs of injury or foul play, they found the case suspicious enough for an investigation. An official statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said, “In the early hours of Thursday, February 27, 2025, Hackman and Arakawa were transported to the Office of the Medical Investigator. An autopsy was performed. Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual. Carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals.”

The statement further stated, “The manner and cause of death have not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.”

The investigating officer who found Gene and Betsy’s dead bodies confirmed that they had been dead for some time due to “decomposition” and “mumification” in the hands and feet of Betsy’s body. A portable heater was found near Arakawa’s head, which the detective believes fell when she abruptly collapsed to the ground.

A bottle of prescription pills was also found in the bathroom and some pills were scattered near her body. The couple’s pet dog, a German Shepherd, was found dead near her.
