Odia Actor Uttam Mohanty Passes Away

Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty has passed away at the age of 66. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Delhi. The late actor was suffering from acute liver ailments some time back. According to reports on February 8, he was also airlifted to a Delhi hospital from Bhubaneshwar.

Manoj Sahu, head of the department of gastroenterology of the Bhubaneshwar hospital had said, “Uttam Mohanty is undergoing treatment for cirrhosis of the liver. He is in the ICU, and his condition is stable. We discussed with his family about his health. We are making arrangements to shift him. He is on organ support, so he can be transferred through air ambulance.”

After the actor’s demise, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said, “I am deeply saddened to know about the demise of Odisha’s popular actor Uttam Mohanty. His departure has created a huge void in the Odia art field. The impression he left in the Odia cinema will always keep him in the hearts of the audience. I pray for the eternal peace of his soul and express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family.” Majhi has also noted that Mohanty’s last rites will be conducted with complete state honours.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “His flawless acting made him popular among the masses. Odisha has lost a jewel. He will continue to reign in the hearts of Odia people for a long time.”

He is survived by his renowned actor wife, Aparajita Mohanty and son, Odia star Babushan.

The late actor began his journey in the Odia film industry with Abhimaan (1977). He has worked in 130 films, including Nijhum Ratira Sathi, Phula Chandana, Jhiati Sita Pari and Danda Balunga. He has also won several accolades, including Odisha State Film Awards. He has also worked in over 30 Bengali films and a Hindi movie.
